David brings a strong mix of academic, private and public-sector experience. He has an ability to relate to people at all levels and can move in different circles to bring partners and people together to tackle big issues and effect change. He has an innate and strong understanding of social and economic development in the public interest. David builds strong teams to drive performance and leads through authenticity, integrity, empowerment, encouragement and professional development.

Personal statement

I am currentlyManaging Director of Cities and Regions Ltd., among other things! See Linkedin: Dr David Wilson I have been lucky enough to work in careers that provide me with a strong sense of meaning and achievement. In 2015 I was elected Chair of the Economic DevelopmentNew Zealand. This was an opportunity to broaden and deepen the organisation with the aim of providing greater strategic alignment and a platform to improve economic development practice in New Zealand. More recently I have been appointed to the Independent Advisory Board of the Provincial Growth Fund, a $3Billion regional development fund designed to support growth in provincial regions.

My expertise primarily lies in regional economic development including local and regional economic development, innovation systems, enterprise, industry and sector development, tourism, events, government and governance, corporate citizenship, civic leadership, sustainable and socio-economic development.


I am married to a beautiful lady Anna with two great kids Ash and Jessica. Anna is an exceptional family doctor working in a low access practice in West Auckland loved by her patients.Ash is a straight A student with a BA and MA in Philosophy with first class honours from Auckland University having previously won the undergraduate philosophy prize at Massey University. We have great discussions on politics, development and philosophy! Jessica is a professional dancer having recently completed full-time commercial training at the Apollo Theatre College where she was top in NZ for American Jazz two years running. Jess has taught me that meaning can be conveyed through movement and timing as well as written and verbal communication. The family enjoys holidays in the far north at the beach with plenty of seafood, wine and friends.
